TRUMP MAKES SIGNIFICANT INROADS
WITH BLACK VOTERS IN GEORGIA
In June of 2023, the Georgia Black Republican Council (GABRC) launched its state-wide Minority Engagement Initiative. The focus of the initiative was on reaching 1.3 million registered black conservative and independent black voters on the relevancy of the conservative message. In May of 2024, Members from Metro Atlanta and the seven urban centers (Savannah, Columbus, Augusta, Athens, Albany, Rome, Macon-Warner Robins, etc.), made phone calls, knocked on doors, held community events, and interviewed with over 100 national and international media outlets in an effort to garner enough black votes for President Trump and other Republican candidates.
Blacks make up the second-largest voting group in Georgia at 33%. Even though the majority of Black voters cast their vote for Harris, the percentage of black votes for Trump along with rural voters was enough to give Trump the win in Georgia.
Based on the final “Exit” polls released by CNN and Fox News, Trump got 12% of the black vote in Georgia (about 20% of black men and 8% of black women) and got double digits of black voters nationally. According to Politico, that’s a significant shift from 2020 “when Trump won 11% of black voters in Georgia.” Trump nationally garnered over 21% of the black vote — which in itself was the highest level of support by Black voters for any Republican since George W. Bush in 2000 - a historic event. However, a sampling of Black Voters by GABRC from a cross the state, of Blacks who actually voted, indicates that the numbers cast for Trump was actually in the 20% range.
Research (Pew, etc.) indicates that Republican victories will occur when a minimum of 10% of the black vote is obtained. With 14%, Republican victories can be sustainable over a longer period of time. The Council is in the process of evaluating how we can increase our numbers to sustainable margins.
Other contributing factors to the success of our efforts were our partnerships with District and County Chairs across the state in reaching black voters, and positive coverage by national and international media outlets that gave black conservatives a voice in our support for President Trump and Republican candidates.
It is historic that both national and international media outlets took an interest in our efforts to go after the Black vote in November. They were serious about providing media coverage on the importance of Georgia during the election cycle and how Black Conservatives would take front and center on making our case to the Black Community.
